Persian Rug Cleaning Around London
Persian rugs are a prized type of rug produced in Iran and the surrounding areas. They represent centuries of culture from the Persian empire and are highly regarded as pieces of art. The weaving process is extremely time-consuming when handmade and can take from several months to several years to complete depending on the size of the rug.
Which Materials Are Used in Persian Rugs?
Most Persian rugs are made of natural materials such as wool, cotton and silk. Sheep wool is mostly used for the pile, although it can also be used for warps and wefts. However, this could make the carpet shrink when wet. Modern rugs will use cotton for the warps and wefts, especially on large rugs, as it tolerates more tension and will lay flat rather than buckle if wet. Silk is mostly used in representative rugs and can be found in the warps as well as in the pile creating extremely fine rugs. These are very fragile and are usually hung on the wall or used as pillows.
Most modern Persian rugs now use synthetic dyes to create any colour or shade and even the most expert eye won’t be able to tell natural from synthetic without a chemical analysis. Older rugs use natural ingredients for dyes such as plants or insects. Dark brown yarns need an iron mordant to set the colour which can fade or damage the rug in the long run. That’s why some collectible Persian rugs have these faded colours on darker areas.
Keeping Your Persian Rug Clean
As for any carpet or rug, you should vacuum your Persian rug regularly to remove dirt and dust. Make sure you turn off the beater bar to avoid damaging the rug as it’s much more delicate than other types of carpets. On top of this, you should get your rug professionally cleaned every three to five years to get rid of the dirt build-up and any stains.
